About the Exhibition

Poet Shuntaro Tanikawa, who passed away in November 2024 at the age of 92, created over 200 picture books in collaboration with various artists and photographers since the 1960s. His works explore themes such as wordplay, clues to understanding the world, and the joys of nonsense. They explore the joys, difficulties, and preciousness of life, as well as death and war, all of which he explores through images and words.
The common thread across these diverse picture books is Shuntaro Tanikawa's hopeful gaze toward his readers. This exhibition will feature approximately 20 picture books, featuring original illustrations, moving images and words, narration and sound, giant picture scrolls, and original installations, all of which will be enjoyed by everyone, from children to adults, as they venture beyond the world of picture books.
