Hiroshi Manabe: Seeing the Past, Seeing the Present, Seeing the Future

Originally from Ehime, Manabe Hiroshi has been active in a variety of fields through his illustrations. Believing that the future is something to be "created" rather than "imagined," Manabe expresses it while keeping a firm eye on the past and present. This exhibition will feature a collection that conveys Manabe's thoughts and perspective on the future, including works related to the 1970 Osaka Expo.
In addition, during the same period, the Seki Museum of Art and Miurato Village will be holding a collaborative project featuring Manabe's works.

About the Exhibition

The Ehime/Matsuyama Museum Street Liaison Council, comprised of 10 museums and cultural facilities centered around Matsuyama Castle, celebrated its 10th anniversary on October 20th. To commemorate this occasion, a special exhibition will be held simultaneously at three museums: the Ehime Prefectural Museum of Art, the Seki Museum of Art, and Miurato Village, showcasing the works of Ehime native Manabe Hiroshi, each from their own perspective.
Manabe Hiroshi (1932-2000) was active in a variety of fields through illustration. Believing that the future was a matter of "creation" rather than "imagination," Manabe expressed his vision of the future by closely examining the past and present.
Our museum houses approximately 20,000 original drawings and other works by Manabe, who was one of the earliest artists to recognize the importance of communicating his work to a wider audience through reproducible media such as books and animation. From this collection, we will be showcasing works from the 1970 Osaka Expo, along with works such as "Japan in 2001" (1969), which give a glimpse into Manabe's thoughts and perspective on the future. We hope this will provide an opportunity to think about what kind of future we can create.

Miura Corporation founder Tamotsu Miura (1928-1996) coincidentally lived during the same period as Hiroshi Manabe and passed away at the same age, 68. Manabe once said, "The future should not be predicted; it should be created." He created the future by drawing it. This common thread, subtitled "Opening the Future," will be showcased alongside Manabe's work, showcasing MIURA's history and the "future" that MIURA is creating.

Seki Museum

Hiroshi Manabe and the Printing Company 2

September 12th (Friday) - November 24th (Monday)
10:00 AM - 5:00 PM (Last admission: 4:30 PM)

Seki Co., Ltd., the museum's parent company, is a printing company responsible for printing Hiroshi Manabe's works. Printing is typically achieved by combining four ink colors (cyan, magenta, yellow, and black). Manabe provided detailed printing instructions from the beginning, with the idea that if he specified colors that could be produced using these four ink colors in the manuscript, there would be no difference between the original and the printed work, and the print would be identical to the manuscript no matter where in the world it was printed. He felt that illustrations were destined to be translated into printing media. Please enjoy his works along with materials related to the printing process.

Closed: Mondays and Tuesdays (open on holidays)
Venue: Seki Museum, 3rd Floor Exhibition Room
Admission: 800 yen for adults, 700 yen for university students, 500 yen for elementary, junior high, and high school students
